Construction of Brookley Air Force Base began in August 1940. It occupied the space formerly occupied by the old Bates Field, named for former mayor Cecil Bates. Brookley was named for Wendell Holsworth Brookley, a captain in the United States Army Air Service who had been killed when his biplane went down over Pennsylvania in 1934.
